Advancing Economic Development through Culture and Arts
San Antonio for Growth on the Eastside (SAGE) welcomed community leaders, partners, artists, educators, business owners, and residents to the 2026 State of the Eastside Breakfast at Brooks City Base for a morning focused on one powerful idea: advancing economic development through culture and arts.
The event celebrated the progress taking place across the Eastside while highlighting how arts, education, entrepreneurship, and strategic partnerships are creating new opportunities for residents, businesses, and future generations.
Building Momentum Through Partnership
SAGE CEO James Norton reflected on the organization’s continued commitment to strengthening the Eastside through economic development initiatives that support small businesses, expand access to capital, and encourage community investment. Over the past year, SAGE has continued to grow its impact by supporting entrepreneurs, investing in commercial corridors, and advancing plans for projects that celebrate the Eastside’s unique culture while creating new economic opportunities.
A Vision for the Eastside’s Future
Keynote speaker Commissioner Tommy Calvert shared an inspiring look at the Eastside’s transformation over the past decade, emphasizing that meaningful economic growth begins with belief, intentional investment, and inclusive partnerships. He highlighted the importance of expanding opportunity while ensuring that longtime residents, businesses, and community institutions remain at the center of future development.
Culture and Arts as Economic Drivers
A panel of community leaders further explored how arts and culture serve as powerful economic drivers. Cassandra Parker-Nowicki, Executive Director of the Carver Community Cultural Center; Dr. Adena Williams Loston, President of St. Philip’s College; and Cody Davenport, CEO of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, shared how their organizations are creating pathways for education, workforce development, youth engagement, and creative expression. From performing and visual arts to culinary education, emerging technologies, and agricultural innovation, each panelist demonstrated how investing in people, culture, and opportunity strengthens both the local economy and the Eastside community.

Throughout the morning, one message remained clear: the Eastside’s greatest strength is its people. By preserving its rich cultural heritage while embracing innovation and collaboration, the community continues to build a future that creates opportunity for everyone.
