San Antonio for Growth on the Eastside (SAGE) has received two major federal grants totaling $2.15 million, marking a historic milestone in the organization’s 25-year mission to strengthen the Eastside community through equitable development.
The first grant, a $2 million planning award from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Reconnecting Communities Program, will fund a transformative effort to explore capping and reimagining portions of the Eastside’s highway system as green, community-centered spaces.
The second, a $150,000 economic development planning grant, will support SAGE’s vision for a new public market complex—a hub for local business incubation, grocery access, and cultural gathering that will serve as a cornerstone for Eastside entrepreneurship.
“These two projects address different challenges, but they converge on one purpose, which is to restore connection,” said James Nortey, CEO of SAGE. “In both efforts, our mission remains to foster economic development without displacement, amplify community voices, and build a future where the Eastside is celebrated.”
Together, these initiatives represent a major step toward reversing historic disinvestment, improving infrastructure, and expanding opportunity for Eastside residents and business owners. Both projects will be developed with extensive community input, ensuring that the people who live and work on the Eastside shape its future.
