Reconnecting
Communities Project
SAGE’s Reconnecting Communities Project is taking bold steps to rebuild the Eastside—not just physically, but through infrastructure that reconnects, greens, and revitalizes neighborhoods long divided by freeway barriers.
Decades ago, freeways like IH‑10, IH‑35, and IH‑37 were constructed through our neighborhoods—segregating communities, displacing families, and slicing Eastside off from downtown. SAGE’s Reconnecting Communities initiative responds with a visionary plan: cap, bury, or transform these stretches into walkable, green, public spaces that restore access, improve safety, and spark renewed opportunity.

Reconnecting Communities is about more than infrastructure—it’s about healing divides and creating spaces where Eastsiders can walk safely, gather freely, and feel pride in their neighborhoods again. By transforming freeways into connections instead of barriers, we open the door to cleaner air, safer streets, and public places that truly belong to the community.
